Duodenal Ulcer
GastroenterologyOverview
A duodenal ulcer is an inflammatory defect of the mucosa at the beginning of the small intestine, related to the action of gastric acid and pepsin. The most common symptom is upper abdominal pain that improves with eating or that wakes the patient at night.
Symptoms
- Hunger pain
- Nighttime pain
- Acid reflux
- Belching
- Upper abdominal discomfort
Treatment
Treatment centers on a full course of acid-suppressing drugs. Patients positive for Helicobacter pylori should receive combination therapy for eradication, and NSAIDs and other triggers should be avoided. Seek prompt care for black stools or vomiting blood.
Dietary advice
Eat regular meals, avoid hunger and overeating, and choose light, warm, soft, easily digestible foods. Avoid spicy, overly acidic, raw, and cold foods as well as strong tea and coffee, and stop smoking and alcohol.
