Optic Neuritis

Overview

Optic neuritis is an inflammatory, demyelinating condition of the optic nerve, often associated with immune factors such as multiple sclerosis. It typically presents with acute vision loss, reduced color vision, and pain on eye movement, usually affecting one eye.

Symptoms

• Rapid vision loss
• Pain on eye movement
• Reduced color vision
• Visual field defects
• Photophobia

Treatment

Intravenous corticosteroids are used in the acute phase, along with active investigation and treatment of underlying causes such as multiple sclerosis.

Dietary advice

Supplement with B vitamins and quality protein, and eat plenty of dark-colored vegetables and fruits.
