Gastric Ulcer
GastroenterologyOverview
Peptic (gastric) ulcer is an inflammatory mucosal defect of the stomach related to gastric acid and pepsin. The most common symptom is upper abdominal pain that may improve with eating or wake the patient at night; complications include bleeding and perforation.
Symptoms
- Upper abdominal pain
- Post-meal pain
- Acid reflux
- Belching
- Bloating
- Nausea
Treatment
A full course of acid-suppressing therapy is central; patients with H. pylori need eradication therapy, and NSAIDs and other damaging factors should be avoided. Seek immediate care for vomiting blood or black stools.
Dietary advice
Eat regularly in small frequent meals, choosing light, warm, soft and easily digestible foods. Avoid spicy, sour, cold foods and strong tea or coffee; strictly avoid smoking and alcohol.
