Gastric Polyps

Overview

A polyp is abnormally growing tissue protruding from the mucosa. Gastric polyps may be neoplastic, hyperplastic, or dysplastic, and neoplastic polyps can be benign, premalignant, or malignant. They are often found incidentally during endoscopy.

Symptoms

• Often asymptomatic
• Dull upper abdominal pain
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Acid reflux

Treatment

Usually found during gastroscopy. Smaller polyps may be monitored with regular follow-up, while larger ones or those at risk of malignant change are often removed endoscopically and sent for pathology. Eradication is recommended for those with concurrent H. pylori.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, regular diet, chew slowly, and consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid spicy, pickled, smoked, and very hot foods, and quit smoking and limit alcohol.
