Strabismus
OphthalmologyOverview
Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes in which both eyes cannot accurately fixate on the same object simultaneously. If it occurs frequently in childhood, it can cause amblyopia or loss of depth perception; in adulthood it may cause double vision. Causes include muscle weakness, hyperopia, brain lesions, trauma, or infection.
Symptoms
- Misaligned eyes
- Double vision
- Eye fatigue
- Compensatory head posture
- Impaired stereopsis
Treatment
Depending on the type, correct with glasses, occlusion, or surgery; children should be treated early to protect binocular vision.
Dietary advice
Eat a balanced, nutritious diet and use the eyes sensibly.
