Overview

Vascular dementia is dementia caused by a series of strokes, in which restricted blood flow reduces oxygen and glucose supply to the brain, damaging cells and impairing neurological function. It usually develops in later life.

Symptoms

  • Unsteady gait

Treatment

Actively control cerebrovascular risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, combined with cognition-enhancing drugs and rehabilitation.

Dietary advice

Eat a low-salt, low-fat diet with foods rich in omega-3 and B vitamins.
