Dentin Hypersensitivity

Overview

Dentin hypersensitivity is a sharp, transient discomfort produced when teeth are exposed to strong hot or cold foods, air, or acidic and sweet stimuli that alter osmotic pressure. This pain is not easily attributed to common dental diseases.

Symptoms

• Aching pain on hot and cold stimuli
• Pain on sweet and sour stimuli
• Sensitivity when brushing
• Brief sharp pain

Treatment

Use desensitizing toothpaste and local desensitizing treatment, avoid triggers, and restore with fillings when defects are marked.

Dietary advice

Avoid overly cold, hot, and acidic foods, reduce carbonated drinks, and adopt a mild diet.
