Cracked Tooth (Tooth Fracture Lines)

Overview

A cracked tooth is a non-physiological fine crack on the surface of the tooth crown, mostly due to weak tooth structure and long-term excessive occlusal force, commonly affecting the posterior teeth. Once the crack extends into the dentin, it can cause localized pain on chewing and sensitivity to hot and cold, and in severe cases, tooth splitting.

Symptoms

• Sharp pain on chewing
• Sensitivity to hot and cold
• Localized pain on biting
• Discomfort

Treatment

Shallow cracks are adjusted and restored with a crown; teeth involving the pulp receive root canal therapy followed by full-crown protection; teeth cracked to the root are extracted.

Dietary advice

Avoid chewing hard foods, use soft foods to reduce load on the affected tooth, and keep the mouth clean.
