Gingivitis

Overview

Gingivitis is an inflammatory disease of the gum tissue, usually caused by dental plaque, and is a common non-destructive oral disease limited to the gums without involving the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, or cementum. Bacteria accumulate in the gingival sulcus, causing bleeding, inflammation, and infection. As the mildest form of periodontal disease, early detection helps prevent irreversible oral damage.

Symptoms

• Red and swollen gums
• Bleeding on brushing
• Itching of the gums
• Bad breath

Treatment

Scaling to remove dental plaque and calculus is the mainstay, combined with correct brushing and oral hygiene maintenance, and most cases heal.

Dietary advice

Eat plenty of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables, keep the diet light, and reduce sweets and sticky foods.
