Rectal Prolapse
ProctologyOverview
Rectal prolapse is the downward displacement of the anal canal, rectum, and sigmoid colon, which may protrude out of the anus. It may be asymptomatic or present with mucous discharge, bleeding, fecal incontinence, and obstructed defecation, and is more common in older women.
Symptoms
- Protruding mass
- Incomplete evacuation
- Anal bearing-down sensation
- Mucous discharge
Treatment
Mild cases are managed with increased dietary fiber, avoiding prolonged squatting, and pelvic floor exercises; severe cases require surgery.
Dietary advice
Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods and drink ample fluids to keep stools soft; avoid prolonged squatting and straining.
