Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis

Overview

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (IgA vasculitis) is a common vasculitis syndrome in children and adolescents caused by immune complex deposition in small vessels. When it involves the kidneys it is called purpura nephritis, presenting with purpura, abdominal pain, joint pain, and hematuria.

Symptoms

• Skin purpura
• Hematuria
• Proteinuria
• Joint swelling and pain
• Abdominal pain

Treatment

Avoid allergens, use corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, and control blood pressure and proteinuria.

Dietary advice

Light, easily digestible diet, avoiding allergenic foods such as seafood and avoiding spicy foods.
