Uterine Prolapse
Obstetrics & GynecologyOverview
Uterine prolapse is a pelvic floor disorder in which the uterus descends from its normal position along the vagina, sometimes protruding through the vaginal opening. It is commonly caused by childbirth injury, pelvic floor laxity, and increased abdominal pressure, presenting mainly with a sensation of pelvic heaviness, low back soreness, and a protruding mass.
Symptoms
- Bearing-down sensation
- Low back soreness
- Vaginal mass protrusion
- Difficulty urinating
- Discomfort when walking
Treatment
Mild cases are managed mainly with pelvic floor muscle exercises and a vaginal pessary, while severe cases may require surgery.
Dietary advice
Eat plenty of high-fiber foods to keep bowel movements regular, and avoid chronic constipation and straining that increases abdominal pressure.
