Gallstones
GastroenterologyOverview
Gallstones are stones that form within the biliary system, including the gallbladder and bile ducts. Most patients have no symptoms, but some develop biliary colic, and complications include cholecystitis, pancreatitis, and hepatitis.
Symptoms
- Right upper abdominal pain
- Abdominal distension
- Nausea
- Belching
- Postprandial discomfort
Treatment
Asymptomatic patients may be observed periodically, while those with recurrent attacks or cholecystitis or bile duct obstruction often require surgery. Acute colic requires prompt medical care and symptomatic management.
Dietary advice
Eat regular meals, especially not skipping breakfast, follow a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, and increase dietary fiber. Avoid greasy foods and overeating.
