Transient Ischemic Attack

Overview

A transient ischemic attack (TIA), commonly called a mini-stroke, is a brief episode of neurological dysfunction from temporary reduced blood supply to the brain. Symptoms mirror those of stroke and usually resolve completely within 24 hours.

Symptoms

• Transient limb weakness
• Transient aphasia
• Blurred vision
• Dizziness
• Facial drooping

Treatment

Give antiplatelet drugs, control risk factors such as blood pressure, lipids, and glucose, and perform carotid surgery for significant stenosis when needed.

Dietary advice

Eat a low-salt, low-fat diet, plenty of vegetables and fruit, and quit smoking and limit alcohol.
