Atrioventricular Block

Overview

Atrioventricular (AV) block is an abnormality in the electrical conduction pathway between the atria and ventricles, in which atrial impulses are partially or completely prevented from reaching the ventricles. It can occur at the AV node, His bundle, or bundle branches and may cause arrhythmias.

Symptoms

• Palpitations
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Transient visual blackout
• Syncope

Treatment

First-degree and some second-degree blocks usually require observation and withdrawal of offending drugs, while high-grade or third-degree block with symptoms requires a permanent pacemaker.

Dietary advice

Light, low-salt diet, balanced nutrition, and avoidance of overexertion and emotional stress.
