Hyperprolactinemia

Overview

Hyperprolactinemia is a condition of elevated blood prolactin levels, often caused by a pituitary tumor. It can cause galactorrhea, menstrual disturbances, and infertility, and is one of the conditions that can mimic polycystic ovary syndrome.

Symptoms

• Galactorrhea
• Menstrual irregularity
• Amenorrhea
• Infertility
• Decreased libido

Treatment

Dopamine receptor agonists are the first-line drug treatment to lower prolactin and shrink the pituitary tumor; surgery may be considered when drugs are ineffective or the tumor is large.

Dietary advice

Balanced diet, regular routine avoiding staying up late and excessive stress, and weight control.
