Apical Periodontitis

Overview

Apical periodontitis is inflammation of the tissues around the tooth root apex, usually caused by pulpal inflammation or infection spreading beyond the apical foramen. It mainly presents with pain on biting, a feeling that the tooth is elevated, and in the acute phase, redness, swelling, and localized abscess in the apical region.

Symptoms

• Pain on biting
• Feeling of tooth elevation
• Gum swelling
• Tenderness in the apical region
• Tooth mobility

Treatment

Root canal therapy to remove infection and provide drainage is the mainstay; incision for drainage in the acute phase, with antibiotics when necessary.

Dietary advice

Eat light soft foods, avoid spicy and hard foods, drink plenty of water, and maintain oral hygiene.
