Macular Degeneration

Overview

Macular degeneration, also called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a degenerative change in the structure of the macula that causes blurred vision or central visual field impairment. Early symptoms are often subtle, and it can progressively worsen, causing loss of central vision and blindness in severe cases.

Symptoms

• Decreased central vision
• Distorted vision
• Central scotoma
• Abnormal color vision
• Common in the elderly

Treatment

Quit smoking and supplement nutrients such as lutein; anti-VEGF injections can slow progression in wet AMD.

Dietary advice

Eat plenty of dark vegetables and fish rich in lutein and antioxidants, and quit smoking.
