Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Overview

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), also called acne inversa, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with recurrent, painful abscesses that rupture and drain fluid or pus, most often in the armpits, under the breasts, and in the groin. Healing leaves scars. Risk factors include obesity, smoking, and family history. It is not contagious and is unrelated to hygiene.

Symptoms

• Painful nodules
• Abscesses
• Sinus tracts
• Scarring

Treatment

Manage weight and stop smoking; use topical or oral antibiotics, and biologics or surgical excision for severe cases.

Dietary advice

Follow a low-sugar, low-fat diet and reduce dairy and high-calorie foods.
