Hyperparathyroidism

Overview

Hyperparathyroidism is a condition of excessive parathyroid hormone secretion, leading to elevated blood calcium. It can cause bone loss, kidney stones, and multi-system symptoms, and is often caused by a parathyroid adenoma.

Symptoms

• Bone pain
• Kidney stones
• Fatigue
• Excessive urination
• Loss of appetite

Treatment

Symptomatic primary cases are best treated with surgical removal of the parathyroid gland, while those unable to undergo surgery use calcimimetics or bisphosphonates to control blood calcium and protect bone.

Dietary advice

Adequate fluids to prevent stones, moderate control of high-calcium foods, and balanced nutrition.
