Overview

Erythema nodosum is an inflammatory disorder of the subcutaneous fat, characterized by red, painful nodules typically on the front of the shins. It is often accompanied by joint pain and mild fever, and heals without scarring.

Symptoms

  • Red nodules on the legs
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Symmetric distribution
  • No ulceration
  • Accompanying joint aches

Treatment

Often related to infection or immune factors. Rest and elevate the affected limb, take NSAIDs, and use corticosteroids when necessary.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and get adequate rest.
