Varicose Veins
CardiologyOverview
Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging, twisted, and dilated superficial veins, most commonly seen in the lower legs. Affected leg veins visibly protrude and become swollen and twisted, with reddened, warm skin, and pain and fatigue when walking.
Symptoms
- Bulging leg veins
- Aching and swelling
- Edema
- Fatigue
- Skin itching
- Pigmentation
Treatment
Mild cases can be managed with compression stockings, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, and elevating the affected limb. Symptomatic cases may be treated with sclerotherapy, laser, or surgery.
Dietary advice
Maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to prevent constipation. Control weight and limit high-salt foods to reduce swelling.
