Corn (Clavus)
DermatologyOverview
A corn is a thickened callus that forms on the skin of the hands or feet due to prolonged pressure and friction, causing localized cone-shaped thickening of the epidermis. It usually occurs on the feet and causes pain when compressed while walking. Wearing loose, well-fitting shoes helps prevent it.
Symptoms
- Localized thickened keratin
- Central hard core
- Pain on pressure
- On pressure-bearing soles
- Worsens with walking
Treatment
Caused by prolonged friction and pressure. Wear loose shoes, apply corn plasters to soften and remove it, and consider surgical excision for stubborn cases.
Dietary advice
A normal balanced diet is sufficient; choose suitable footwear to reduce friction.
