Oral Leukoplakia

Overview

Oral leukoplakia refers to white patches firmly adhered to the oral mucosa, associated with the development of oral cancer. The patches often have irregular borders and may change over time. It is considered a potentially malignant lesion, with risk factors including smoking, excessive alcohol, and betel nut chewing.

Symptoms

• White patches on the oral mucosa
• Rough sensation
• Local numbness
• Cannot be wiped off

Treatment

Remove irritants such as tobacco and alcohol, apply topical retinoids, follow up regularly, and surgically excise lesions suspected of malignant change.

Dietary advice

Quit smoking and alcohol, avoid spicy and hot foods, and eat plenty of foods rich in vitamin A and carotene.
