Chronic Subdural Hematoma

Overview

Chronic subdural hematoma is a collection of blood between the dura mater and the arachnoid membrane surrounding the brain, usually from rupture of bridging veins after head trauma. Symptoms include headache, confusion, personality changes, and weakness, and it is more common in the elderly.

Symptoms

• Headache
• Limb weakness
• Slowed responses
• Unsteady gait

Treatment

Symptomatic or large hematomas are usually treated with burr-hole drainage; postoperative bed rest and imaging follow-up are needed, while small hematomas may be observed conservatively.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced, nutritious diet with adequate protein and produce, and avoid alcohol and overly salty foods.
