Urinary Incontinence

Overview

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine from the urethra beyond conscious control, usually caused by damage to the bladder sphincter or neurological dysfunction, significantly affecting quality of life. It is classified into overflow, stress, urge, reflex, and unresisted types.

Symptoms

• Urine leakage
• Urgent urination
• Leakage on coughing
• Nighttime urination
• Poor urinary control

Treatment

Mild to moderate cases can be improved with pelvic floor muscle and bladder training, with medication under physician guidance when needed; severe stress incontinence may be considered for surgery.

Dietary advice

Control weight, avoid bladder-irritating drinks such as coffee and alcohol, and maintain regular urination and moderate fluid intake.
