Sebaceous Cyst (Epidermoid Cyst)

Overview

A term commonly used for epidermoid and pilar cysts. Despite the name, these cysts do not originate from sebaceous glands and their contents are keratin rather than sebum, so they are popularly called wen or steatocystoma.

Symptoms

• Subcutaneous nodule
• Firm texture
• Movable
• Central punctum

Treatment

Small asymptomatic cysts can be observed, while those with recurrent infection or cosmetic concern are treated by complete surgical excision of the cyst wall.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, low-fat diet and reduce greasy and sugary foods.
