Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
UrologyOverview
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in men in which enlargement of the prostate causes a group of lower urinary tract symptoms. It is characterized by hyperplasia of the middle lobe of the prostate.
Symptoms
- Urinary frequency
- Increased nocturia
- Difficulty urinating
- Weak urine stream
- Sense of incomplete emptying
Treatment
Patients with mild symptoms may be observed and followed up, while moderate or more severe cases can use alpha-blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Severe symptoms or complications warrant surgery such as transurethral resection of the prostate.
Dietary advice
Drink plenty of water but less before bedtime, eat a light diet, avoid spicy foods and alcohol, and avoid prolonged sitting and holding urine.
