Deep Vein Thrombosis

Overview

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the deep veins of the lower legs or pelvis, and occasionally in the upper limbs.

Symptoms

• Lower limb swelling
• Pain
• Increased skin warmth
• Redness
• Heaviness

Treatment

Prompt standardized anticoagulation with low-molecular-weight heparin and oral anticoagulants; elevate the affected limb in the acute phase, and consider catheter-directed thrombolysis or an inferior vena cava filter when needed.

Dietary advice

Light, low-fat diet, plenty of fluids to prevent blood thickening, and foods rich in dietary fiber.
