Hiatal Hernia

Gastroenterology

Overview

A hiatal hernia is protrusion of an abdominal organ, usually part of the stomach, through the diaphragmatic esophageal hiatus into the chest. It can cause gastroesophageal reflux with symptoms such as heartburn, an acid taste, and difficulty swallowing.

Symptoms

  • Acid regurgitation
  • Heartburn
  • Retrosternal pain
  • Belching

Treatment

Mild cases are managed with acid suppression and lifestyle changes; surgical repair is used for marked symptoms or large hernias.

Dietary advice

Eat small frequent meals, avoid overeating, do not lie down after meals, and avoid high-fat and irritating foods.
