Retinal Artery Occlusion

Overview

Retinal artery occlusion is blockage of the central retinal artery or its branches, cutting off blood supply to the retina. It causes sudden, painless vision loss and is an ophthalmic emergency.

Symptoms

• Painless vision loss
• Sudden vision drop
• Visual field defect
• Pupillary changes

Treatment

This is an ophthalmic emergency requiring prompt care with measures to lower intraocular pressure and dilate vessels, along with evaluation for systemic vascular risk factors.

Dietary advice

Eat a low-salt, low-fat diet, control blood pressure and lipids, and stop smoking.
