Chalazion

Overview

A chalazion is an eyelid cyst caused by blockage of a meibomian (oil) gland, usually located in the middle of the eyelid, red but not painful, and often persisting for several weeks. It may follow a stye or result from thickened secretions blocking the gland.

Symptoms

• Painless eyelid lump
• Firm consistency
• Skin not red
• Slow growth
• Foreign body sensation

Treatment

Caused by meibomian gland blockage. Early on, use warm compresses and massage to promote absorption; larger lesions require surgical curettage.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, limit greasy foods, and eat plenty of vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables.
