Myocardial Infarction
CardiologyOverview
Myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, is damage to the heart muscle caused by reduced or blocked coronary blood flow. Because it is often acute and severe, it is frequently referred to as acute myocardial infarction.
Symptoms
- Severe chest pain
- Chest tightness
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Shortness of breath
- Sense of impending doom
Treatment
In the acute phase, early reperfusion therapy (percutaneous coronary intervention or thrombolysis) is needed to open the blocked vessel, along with antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and statin medications. Maintain secondary prevention and cardiac rehabilitation during recovery.
Dietary advice
Follow a low-salt, low-fat, light diet with small, frequent meals and avoid overeating. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and stop smoking while limiting alcohol.
