Enuresis (Bedwetting)

Pediatrics

Overview

Enuresis, commonly known as bedwetting, is involuntary urination during sleep in children over age 5, often related to delayed bladder function development, sleep-arousal disorders, and genetic factors. It presents mainly with repeated unconscious urination at night and can affect a child's mental health.

Symptoms

  • Nighttime bedwetting
  • Deep sleep
  • Daytime urinary frequency
  • Difficulty being awakened

Treatment

Focus on behavioral training such as limiting fluids before bed, bladder training, and waking to urinate; use medication as directed if needed.

Dietary advice

Ensure adequate fluid intake during the day, reduce fluids and sugary drinks within 2 hours of bedtime, and avoid diuretic foods.
