Pre-excitation Syndrome (WPW Syndrome)

Overview

Pre-excitation syndrome is an arrhythmia caused by an abnormal accessory conduction pathway between the atria and ventricles. Electrical impulses can bypass the normal AV node and prematurely activate the ventricles, readily triggering paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia with palpitations.

Symptoms

• Palpitations
• Chest tightness
• Dizziness
• Shortness of breath
• Fatigue

Treatment

For recurrent tachycardia, catheter radiofrequency ablation is the preferred curative treatment; acute episodes can be terminated with medication or cardioversion, avoiding drugs that enhance accessory pathway conduction.

Dietary advice

Limit caffeine and alcohol, keep a light and balanced diet, and maintain a regular routine to avoid fatigue.
