Acromegaly

Overview

Acromegaly is a disease caused by excess growth hormone secretion after the growth plates have closed, more than 95% of cases resulting from a benign pituitary adenoma. Early signs are usually enlargement of the hands and feet, with possible enlargement of the forehead, jaw, and nose.

Symptoms

• Enlarged hands and feet
• Facial changes
• Headache
• Excessive sweating
• Joint pain

Treatment

Transsphenoidal surgery to remove the pituitary growth-hormone adenoma is the treatment of choice; residual or recurrent disease can be treated with somatostatin analogs or radiotherapy.

Dietary advice

Balanced diet, control of blood glucose and blood pressure, and plenty of fresh produce and quality protein.
