Fatty Liver Disease
GastroenterologyOverview
Fatty liver disease is a condition of excessive fat accumulation in the liver, characterized by triglyceride buildup and diffuse fatty degeneration of hepatocytes. It is commonly associated with alcohol use or obesity and metabolic dysfunction.
Symptoms
- Fatigue
- Right upper abdominal discomfort
- Bloating
- Poor appetite
Treatment
Lifestyle changes—weight control, sensible diet and regular exercise—are central, along with managing blood glucose and lipids and abstaining from alcohol. Most non-alcoholic fatty liver can be reversed with lifestyle improvement.
Dietary advice
Control total calorie intake, reduce high-fat, high-sugar and fried foods, and increase vegetables, whole grains and quality protein. Strictly limit alcohol and eat regularly.
