Aortic Valve Stenosis

Overview

The aortic valve is the heart valve located between the left ventricle and the aorta, one of the four heart valves and one of the two semilunar valves. It normally has three cusps, though 1-2% of people are born with only two. Narrowing of this valve obstructs blood flow from the heart to the body.

Symptoms

• Chest pain
• Syncope
• Shortness of breath
• Palpitations
• Fatigue

Treatment

Mild to moderate cases require regular follow-up, while severe symptomatic stenosis needs aortic valve replacement or transcatheter valve implantation; medications only relieve symptoms.

Dietary advice

Low-salt, low-fat diet, weight control, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol, and balanced nutrition.
