Uterine Fibroids

Overview

Uterine fibroids (uterine leiomyomas) are benign tumors formed by proliferation of the uterine smooth muscle tissue with a small amount of fibrous connective tissue, and are the most common benign tumor of the female reproductive organs. They occur mainly in women aged 30 to 50 and are often asymptomatic; a minority present with vaginal bleeding, a palpable abdominal mass, and pressure symptoms, and they are a leading reason for hysterectomy.

Symptoms

• Heavy menstrual bleeding
• Prolonged periods
• Lower abdominal heaviness
• Frequent urination
• Anemia

Treatment

Small, asymptomatic fibroids are followed with regular monitoring, while symptomatic or larger ones may be treated with medication or surgery under medical guidance.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced diet, reduce high-fat foods, and avoid supplements containing estrogen.
