Molluscum Contagiosum

Overview

Molluscum contagiosum is a contagious skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). Lesions are characteristic dome-shaped, pearly, waxy papules or nodules with a central umbilication, from which a cheesy molluscum body can be expressed.

Symptoms

• Dome-shaped papules
• Central umbilication
• Waxy luster
• Cheesy material can be expressed
• Mildly contagious

Treatment

Caused by a poxvirus; lesions can be removed with forceps followed by iodine tincture, or by curettage or cryotherapy.

Dietary advice

A light diet with balanced nutrition to boost resistance.
